Employee issues can be caused by a lack of appropriate human resources policies and processes in place to support employee performance, behavior, and attitudes. If they do not know what you want, how can they deliver what you need? You do not want to hear Whoopi Goldberg  in Ghost saying, “ You in danger girl.” 

As we move past COVID-19, it is worth re-evaluating what skills you will need in the new workplace. How have the skills of our employees grown? Do your employees have the right skills for the way your business has changed? How do you recruit the future employees you will need to move your company forward? These are key questions that you as the business owner, C-suite professional or manager should be thinking about before things move too far forward into our new post-COVID-19 world.

How can you show who you are on a 13” video screen? How do you show a professional appearance and answer all the questions the interviewer has with clarity and personality without the other person physically in the room? These are hard questions to answer and we need to start getting used to this as the new reality.

Resumes are a paper version of you. In looking at least 100 per week sometimes, I believe that what is presented to me is the best version of the person who is applying for the job and at any time can back up the words they have put down to paper. However, sometimes there is so little or so much in the resume it has actually done them a disservice because the paper version of themselves does not represent how AMAZING they are.

Businesses, large or small, corporate or non-profit, want to know about your skills, but they also want to know about how you used those skills to make something better, increase a sales goal, or build something magnificent. An accomplishment can be as little as being a part of a team that helped to increase a sales goal by 30% in 2016, to being the project manager who lead a team to open 3 new call centers in 3 years. We must take the time to think about not only what we CAN do but also what we DID do.

As Managerial professionals we work each day in the parameters of policy, law, procedure, and culture. However, serving the day to day needs of the humans that do the job is our most important responsibility. We advise on the tough decisions, investigate the conflicts, continue to create a culture of harmony, while also being the conduit between people and company. Ethics is about people after all.
